The campground is on the strand approximately six miles south of Coronado Island and approximately three miles north of Imperial Beach. It's in San Diego yet, it's a semi remote camping location with water on two sides. The beaches, waves, water, and sky are beautiful at this location. It's more remote than most campgrounds in San Diego but, that is a good thing in most cases. The campground has ocean fishing, surfing, swimming, kiteboarding, picnicking, and an Aquatic Center. There are nature tours, campfire programs, and Kayak tours that are arranged by the state park. A pedestrian tunnel takes you to the bike trail and the Aquatic Center.
Gas stations and restaurants are not available in the immediate area. Imperial Beach is the closest location for gas and great restaurants. There is also a pier and beach. To the north of the campground is Coronado Island where the restaurants are a bit more expensive but well worth the prices. See the PHOTO tab for pictures of the Coronado Hotel and other sights.
Passing the campground and running through the San Diego Bay is a 24-mile bicycle route called the Bayshore Bikeway. It's a paved, bike trail on the east side of highway 75. The trail goes up the strand between Imperial Beach and Coronado Island. The other end of the trail goes to downtown San Diego. It doesn't completely circle the bay, it's more U shaped.
There are 120 camp spots available at this location. Reservations can be made through Reserve America, www.reserveamerica.com or call (800) 444-7275.
No tenting at this location, self contained vehicles only.
This campground is open all year.
Pull throughs are not available. Big rigs up to 40 feet can be accommodated however, some spots are smaller.
Pets are allowed on six foot leashes only.
Unlike most campsites, picnic tables are not provided, no BBQ's, and no fire rings. However, fire rings are available on the beach only. Firewood was not available at the campground. Ice was also not available.
Recreational activities outside the Silver Strand area include Downtown San Diego, San Diego Zoo, Balboa Park, Air and space Museum, Old Town San Diego, USS Carrier Midway, and Mission Bay.
The Metro Transit System (MTS) stops at the park entrance and goes to Imperial Beach, Coronado Island, and points beyond.
