California, Mount Whitney Trailhead Campground

Directions: 

From Highway 395 in Lone Pine, CA, turn west (at the stoplight) onto Whitney Portal Road. The campground is approximately 12 miles from Lone Pine. Park in the "Overflow" parking lot at Whitney Portal.  Its located at the end of road turn-around.

Mount Whitney Trailhead Campground is a walk-in tent only campground.  No RV camping.  Its located at the Whitney Portal parking lot.  A vault toilet is available.  The parking lot is located just a short distance from each camp spot.  Some spots have fire rings but, not all.  Some spots have a table but, not all.  All spots have one or two level tent pads. There are just 10 camp spots at this location.  There is a group of bear lockers near the top of the campground.  This is an active bear area.  THERE IS A ONE NIGHT STAY LIMIT IN THIS CAMPGROUND.  Usage is heavy in the summer months.  They don't allow camping in the parking lot.  There is no drinking water in the campground.  There is NO cell service in the area around the campground.  

Local Activities:

Diaz Lake.  The lake has a small launch ramp and fishing available.  Mostly a fishing and kayaking lake.  Swimming is allowed.

Alabama Hills Recreation area is located near this park.

Mount Whitney.  Mount Whitney is the tallest mountain in the continental United States.

Alabama Hills Cafe and Bakery.  Campbase had breakfast at the cafe and we recommend it.  Great breakfast and large portions.  Its located in downtown Lone Pine near the corner of Highway-395 and Whitney Portal Road.

Lone Pine Smokehouse.  We saved this one for our next visit but, it looks good.

The Pizza Factory is located in downtown Lone Pine.
