Description

California, the Imperial Sand Dunes is also known as the Glamis Sand Dunes.  It's a large off road recreation area.  There is open/primitive camping available in camping areas located around the park.  The recreation area is broken up into the north section and the south section.  Restrooms are available in selected camping areas.  RV hookups are not available anywhere.  Detailed information can be found here.

Imperial Sand Dunes.  During Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years the park can be insainely crowded.  Even though it's open camping, spots are hard to find.  It's best to avoid these times if you don't like crowds. 

CAUTION: street addressing is strange in this area.  There are two Gecko roads in the area.  It's a wilderness area and numeric addresses are not provided.  The best location is HWY 78 and Gecko Road.

In general, the east side of the dunes is open camping on mostly hard packed surfaces.  Behind the Glamis Beach Store on the east side is a large parking area that is mostly hard packed and a good area for large RV's.  On the west side is primarily camping along the road or in paved campgrounds.  There are numerous campgrounds in the park.  Below is a list

Many campers take advantage of the Glamis RV Storage located across the highway from the Glamis Beach Store.  The storage lot has a tow service available.  Propane, Fuel, and water are available in the storage yard.  www.glamisDunesStorage.com.

Occasionally, RVers get stuck in the sand.  See the pictures of a large RV stuck in the sand at Glamis under the PHOTOS tab.  If you get stuck there is help available.  Call the Glamis Beach Towing at (760) 587-3016.  They can tow anything out, see the pics.

Whips and flags are REQUIRED on all off road equipment.  Lighted whips are best.  Also, have your registration available.

A camping pass is required to use the park.  Passes can be found at the ranger station on Gecko road, Sweet Marie's, and some of the concession shops near the Beach Store.
