Crater Lake National Park is a seasional park due to usually heavy winter snows. The park has two campgrounds Mazama Campground and Lost Creek Campground. Make sure you call ahead and verify your campground will be open for your visit. Click here for the parks campground page Crater Lakes campgrounds. Campbase also has detailed camping campground information on each campground. Click here for our detailed pages Mazama Campground, Lost Creek Campground. Crater Lake is Oregons only national park.
There is also one lodge and cabins available in the park. Crater Lake Lodge is located right on the craters rim with spectacular views from most rooms. Crater Lake Lodge also has a first class restaurant and lounge. At the parks Western entrance you will find Mazama Village. Cabins are available at the village. The cabins are located near the campground for those friends that don't camp. Mazama Village also has a market, restaurant, fuel, gift shop, firewood, and Ice. It's the only choice for RV camping. Lost Creek Campground does not allow RV's. Mazama Village also has the parks only RV dump station. However, it may not be open due mostly to freezing pipes. It's best to have empty holding tanks when you enter the park.
Depending on weather conditions(mostly snow) the parks roads may not be open. During the Campbase visit in July the loop around the crater was not open. Campbase recommends an August or September visit to make sure all campgrounds and roads are open. Road opening dates vary from year to year.
This campground does have mosquitoes. Depending on the time of year, they can be quite a nuisance. Campbase recommends a mosquito mesh hat, insect repellent, and a mosquito net awning to sit in. If mosquitoes bother you, these items are essential for this location.
Campbase recommends you pickup the parks newspaper at the park entrance or at Mazama Village. The paper has great details about all the parks activities. Here is a link to the parks paper.
The park and campgrounds are a bit remote with limited services in the area so, it's best to bring everything you'll need with you.
Local Recreation:
Photography is popular in and around Crater Lake. The views are so spectacular you almost can't take a bad picture. See the Campbase photo tab for a few examples. The highway circles Crater Lake giving an unlimited number of angles and lighting options.
Boat tours on Crater Lake are usually available from July through August, weather permitting. Call 888-774-2728 for reservation information. Several different types of tours can be arranged. The basic tour is a two hour, ranger-narrated boat tour. Tickets are available by calling or from the kiosk at Annie Creek Gift Shop.
Trolley tours that circle Crater Lake can be arranged at Rim Village. Tours lasting approximately 2 hours start and end there. Tours go clock wise around the lake and stop at five different overlooks. Each trolley has just 25 seats. Tours do not run when the highway loop is closed due to snow.
