Camping & COVID-19
As COVID-19 and quarantine procedures intensify, you may be wondering how all of this may impact your upcoming (or current) camping trip. For those campgrounds that remain open, you may question if it’s possible to camp safely during this time.
Oftentimes, camping is not a group activity, making social distancing still possible while camping. Despite this, camping can also increase your exposure if not done carefully. Therefore, you probably have many questions.
While we cannot provide any guarantees during these trying times, what we can do is provide you with some information on how campgrounds are taking action and hopefully give you some peace of mind.
Safety Measures
Safety is a top priority in the camping community. At Campbase, we are monitoring COVID-19 closely. Many campsites and resorts are still open and operating. Strict guidelines and safety procedures have been put into place including:
● Additional cleaning protocols such as:
○ Cleaning and disinfecting more frequently
○ Providing special attention to high-touch areas (i.e. the front desk, credit card machines, door handles, keyboards, etc.)
○ Making sure restrooms are continually replenished
● Encouraging guests and employees to follow social distancing practices, including:
○ Asking employees to stay home if feeling ill or after coming in contact with someone who may be ill
○ Avoiding any physical contact such as handshakes
○ Cancelling large employee meetings and camp activities
○ Making food takeout available
○ Altering check-in procedures (i.e. offering mobile check-in)
● Monitoring CDC recommendations
● Expanding helpline hours
The Camping Community is Here For You
The camping community is strong, and we know there’s nothing we can’t overcome together. Despite this, there is a current pandemic. And while camping may be your home away from home, please use caution. If you have any medical issues you are concerned about, frequently come in contact with others who are at risk, are feeling ill or have come in contact with someone who may be ill, then avoid camping at this time.
If you want to change camping plans, many campgrounds are increasing their flexibility with cancellations and rescheduling.
Don’t hesitate to contact the campground’s helpline if you have any questions or need assistance regarding a current or future camping reservation. Many campsites are working diligently to point campers in the right direction.
To find a campground and its contact information, search our site for campgrounds.
Some states, including California, have completely closed all campgrounds and parks. California has closed vehicle access to all 280 of its parks. Other states may be implementing the same procedures. Call ahead before you travel and verify the campground will be open.
